During 2008, the Cathedral is also remembering its famous Bishop George Bell, 1883-1958. George Bell is famous worldwide for his life's work, and in particular for his courageous - and controversial - stance during the Second World War. Bell's memorial in the Cathedral records him as nothing less than, "a champion of the oppressed." In 2008, it will be 50 years since the death of this remarkable man and events throughout the year will celebrate his life and his work. These two unique anniversaries make for a fascinating year at Chichester Cathedral. The programme of events includes (click on a title for further information): A series of lectures given by a number of famous speakers (April to September) A programme of exhibitions in the Cathedral's North Transept (March to Dec) A season of films in collaboration with Chichester Cinema at New Park (May to June), including Open Air Cinema on the Cathedral Green on the 16th August A "Festival of Flowers" (May) A Praise in the Nave concert (20th September) A series of special sermons (September to October) A special weekend of celebration to mark the 900th Anniversary (3rd to 5th October) A spectacular Son et Lumière (9th to 22nd November) 'A Story Set in Stone' - where the Cathedral's history will be brought to life and projected onto its own architecture using the very latest audio-visual technology.
